Thursday Thirteen Edition 2

(Even though it's still Wednesday)

Thirteen Things about Rebecca's childhood

1. My father is a Methodist pastor, so we moved every three to five years.
2. When I was in preschool my teacher changed my panties after I had an accident. Even though she took me off to the side, it really embarrassed me.
3. When I was in 1st grade, my teacher called me a buttinsky. It was true. However, the memory can still bring me to tears in the right circumstances -- 25 years later.
4. I felt like no one liked me, which I'm now learning is a common perception among young people, no matter how popular others perceive a person to be.
5. I stopped growing when I was in 7th grade.
6. I went to private school from 6th through 8th grade. Otherwise, I was in public schools.
7. My junior year of high school I decided to go to college in the town we lived in for 5 years when I was a kid. One of the best decisions I ever made.
8. I organized a surprise party for my fourth-grade teacher. She was surprised.
9. I was in the gifted program in fourth grade. That was the best year of elementary school.
10. I had guinea pigs for two or three years when I was a teenager. I was completely responsible for their care.
11. I was able to BE completely responsible for said guinea pigs' care because I started a paper route when I was 11. I had it until we moved away when I was fifteen. We had to find a new home for the guinea pigs. :(
12. My junior year of high school I went on two dates with a guy as a result of a misunderstanding. (Two people who didn't like me -- or the guy -- wrote a note to each of us "from" the other one, indicating interest. Lovely.)
13. My senior year of high school, someone in my American history class asked if I "masticated in front of my parents." I told them I wouldn't answer because I didn't know what "masticate" meant. Turns out I DO masticate in front of my parents. :)

Oh my....I would have post traumatic stress disorder on the #2....did you purposely add this for that particular number also? LOL ---okay, so I don't want to embarrass you any more than you already were. Sorry 'bout that.

My 13 is shared now too.

Ha! You're a riot! No, I had a #1 accident.

And, unlike being the being called a buttinsky incident, I am over it. :)

Thanks for coming by!

Very interesting. I'm not sure in #1 why one should follow from the other though.

#13 made me laugh! I was once asked if I had ever committed a piscatorial act in public. As it happens, I haven't, but if I had I wouldn't be ashamed of it!

You may not think so, but you've had a cool past. Why'd you leave the gifted program, though? Sounds like it was a great fit for you.

Happy TT; thanks for visiting!

Nicholas,

Methodist pastors move every few years. I don't know why. They just do. My dad says he thinks the CHURCH members should have to move and the PASTOR stay. :)

It was hard growing up, but looking back, I don't think I'd change it.

Thanks for stopping by!

Awww guinea piggies are the best eh! Thanks for sharing a bit about your childhood with us, and happy TT :)

Thanks, Susan! :)

The year I was in fourth grade was the first year of this particular program.

Apparently, there was some hesitancy on the part of some parents and children about the program.

Maybe I was sixth or seventh "string," but it was the best year.

At the end of the school year they re-evaluated all of us, not giving preference to people already in the program. I did not qualify for the full-time gifted program. Nor did I qualify for the 1-day-a-week gifted program I'd been a part of in third grade.

Fifth-grade was the longest. year. ever. It was truly dreadful. I was bored, bored, bored.

Thankfully, in middle school, high school, and college I was able to take challenging classes... most of the time. :)

I hadn't told that story in a long time...

By the way, my response to Hootin' Anni makes no sense. Do not take this as proof that maybe I'm not the smartest bulb afterall. :)

Great T-13! I too stopped growing (vertically) by the 7th grade and had guinea pigs :)

#8 so sweet!

The muscles of mastication are some of the strongest in your body! :)

Sounds as if you were a really lovely child and adolescent---such a shame that so many such don't feel liked. (Shame on that one teacher, though).

I was glad to see the Nick Hornby book on your "shelf"---didn't know he had another out. I must buy it. I wasn't keen on "A long way down..." but I still love his earlier stuff.

Boy that's tough. I wish growing up was easier. I'm certain you are a deeper and more thoughtful person because of it. I hope the present is easier!

Happy TT!

Great list...I think we all have ups and downs of childhood that we remember. In the end, we usually turn out alright:) Happy TT and thanks for stopping by.

That must have been hard to have to move around so much. I wonder why they make the pastors do that...

It's awful how those things from your childhood stick with you, even when you're older and can see it from the other side.

I keep trying to tell my kids #4--that everybody feels that way, they're not alone when they do... but it doesn't seem to sink it. It appears it's a conclusion you have to come to on your own.

I erased my whole school time from my memory, lol !

I had guinea pigs from the fifth grade, off and on until my fist child came along. They are fun little critters. I also had a paper route, but it was mostly in name only. I had to collect, but my bro-in-law actually threw the papers. I loved fourth grade best; it was the year before my mom died, I had a teacher that really made learning FUN and she taught some of the most interesting lessons of my whole school career. It was fun reading your list!

Wow. That was a real "from the heart" TT. Very refreshing. Teachers don't realize that the things they say really stick with us!
